March Devotional
Theme: Walking in Hope
Day 1 of 31
Day 1 — Hope is an Anchor
"We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain."
An anchor is fundamentally useless on the deck of a ship. It only fulfills its purpose when it is thrown completely out of sight, sinking into the hidden depths to grip the solid floor beneath the turbulent waters. Biblical hope operates exactly the same way.
Hope is not a fragile wish or a desperate desire for things to get better. It is an unbending confidence tethered to something entirely outside of our current circumstances. The writer of Hebrews tells us this anchor doesn't grip the ocean floor, but the very throne room of God ('behind the curtain'). When the storms of life violently pitch our tiny vessels, we don't have to panic. Our stability isn't determined by the size of the waves, but by the immovable object our anchor is wrapped around.
"Hope is the confident expectation of divine goodness."
What practical, earthly things have you been trying to 'anchor' your soul to (finances, relationships, health)? Try consciously transferring that weight to God's promises today.
Your stability in the storm depends entirely on where your anchor is dropped.
